Definition of Multiple Intelligencs
This theory of human intelligence, developed by psychologist Howard Gardner and known as Gardners' Multiple Intelligences Theory, suggests there are at least seven ways that people have of perceiving and understanding the world. Gardner labels each of these ways a distinct "intelligence"--in other words, a set of skills allowing individuals to find and resolve genuine problems they face.
Gardner defines an "intelligence" as a group of abilities that:
- Is somewhat autonomous from other human capacities;
- Has a core set of information-processing operations;
- Has a distinct history in the stages of development we each pass through;
- Has plausible roots in evolutionary history.

How Multiple Intelligences Impact Learning
Curriculum--Traditional schooling heavily favors the verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences. Gardner suggests a more balanced curriculum that incorporates the arts, self-awareness, communication, and physical education.
Instruction -- Gardner advocates instructional methods that appeal to all the intelligences, including role playing, musical performance, cooperative learning, reflection, visualization, story telling, and so on.
Assessment --This theory calls for assessment methods that take into account the diversity of intelligences, as well as self-assessment tools that help students understand their intelligences.
While Gardner suggests his list of intelligences may not be exhaustive, he identifies the following seven:
- Verbal-Linguistic --The ability to use words and language
- Logical-Mathematical --The capacity for inductive and deductive thinking and reasoning, as well as the use of numbers and the recognition of abstract patterns
- Visual-Spatial --The ability to visualize objects and spatial dimensions, and create internal images and pictures
- Body-Kinesthetic --The wisdom of the body and the ability to control physical motion
- Musical-Rhythmic --The ability to recognize tonal patterns and sounds, as well as a sensitivity to rhythms and beats
- Interpersonal --The capacity for person-to-person communications and relationships
- Intrapersonal --The spiritual, inner states of being, self-reflection, and awareness

The following three books are of particular interest to those of you interested in the psychological basis of the theory of Multiple Intelligences.
Frames of Mind - The Theory of Multiple Intelligences
Howard Gardner second edition 1993 (Fontana Press)
£9.99 ($18.43)
‘Offers a cogent, multi-dimensional answer to the IQ testing fanatics… a real alternative to the blind empiricism of the IQ testers. How refreshing to see it justified in scholarly terms.’ Issac Asimov
‘When Frames of Mind was first published in 1984 it was acclaimed as ‘a most important contribution to cognitive psychology’. In it Howard Gardner demonstrates that there exist many human ‘intelligences’, common to all cultures – each with its own patterns of development and brain activity, and each different in kind from the others. These potentials include linguistic, musical, and logical/mathematical capacities, as well as spatial and bodily intelligences, and the ability to arrive at an emotional and mental sense of self and other people. Rather than reducing an individual’s potential to a single score on an IQ rest, it is the fostering and education of all these intelligences that should be our concern. Gardner’s controversial argument has resounding implications for the ways in which we think about intelligence and education.’ (Book cover)

Intelligence – Multiple Perspective
Howard Gardner, Mindy L. Kornhaber, Warren K. Wake 1996
Harcourt Brace College Publishers
£33.99 ($62.70)
‘In one volume we have surveyed the major approaches to intelligence that have evolved since the scientific study of intelligence began, a century ago. We begin by considering conceptions of intelligence in different cultures and historical eras. We then explore intelligence as it is usually conceived of – as a psychological and biological property of the individual. Next we present alternative concepts of intelligence. Finally, we investigate intelligence as it plays out in broader contests, such as in the school and the workplace.’ (Preface)
This is an introductory textbook on intelligence – a good basis for further study.

Multi Intelligences - the theory in Practice
Howard Gardner 1993 Basic Books
£18.50 ($34.16)
Howard Gardner’s brilliant conception of individual competence is changing the face of education today. In the ten years since the publication of his seminal Frames of Mind, thousands of educators, parents, and researchers have explored the practical implications of Multiple Intelligences (MI) theory – the powerful notion that there are separate human capacities, ranging from musical intelligence to the intelligence involved in understanding oneself. Multiple Intelligences: The Theory in Practice brings together previously published and original work by Gardner and his colleagues at Project Zero to provide a coherent pictures of what we have learned about the educational applications of MI theory from projects in schools and formal research over the last decade. (Book cover)
“Brilliantly connecting what must happen in the classroom
to what must happen in educational policy,
this is important reading not just for teachers,
but for school board members, legislators, and other policy makers.”

Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the website where selected books and videos on multiple-intelligences are available without you having to spend your valuable time searching for them. Join the hundreds who have received a free newsletter and subscribe to receive them regularly.
I can help you to 'meet' others interested in and working on the same subject as yourself. I am in contact with teachers and professors in Algeria, Canada, India, Iran, Malta, Portugal, Qatar, South Africa, Spain and the USA who have visited this site.
No, I have not carried out a questionnaire on multiple intelligences, but I have carried out a multiple intelligences teacher survey, and find that many of you want to know more about:
• Gardners inventory multiple intelligences;
• classroom use & diagrams of Multiple Intelligence;
• multiple intelligences social studies activities, and
• preferred learning styles quiz ideas.
I am writing to you because I believe I can bring you answers. Garner believes that we all have multiple intelligences in some areas and not in others. I have found that pupils succeed best when taught through their strengths. Having been a class teacher, Headteacher (Principal) and School Inspector, I know the joy of seeing students succeed and how difficult it sometimes can be for teachers to provide for all the different pupils in their classes. On the positive side, as a classteacher, every child left my class able to read, in spite of some coming to me at the age of eleven without any reading skills. I would have considered I'd failed as a teacher, if I hadn't taught them this basic skill. However, you may find it hard to motivate some pupils and challenge the most able. Some pupils may be listless, others disruptive. Wrong food, poor clothing or lack of sleep may be some of the reasons for this, but have you asked yourself recently, 'what is my contribution to their lack of involvement?' and, 'what would interest and motivate them?' Have you identified their particular strengths or aptitudes? Do you feel that they are intelligent but not in the way people usually use the term? Have you asked the students how they think they learn best?
For example, Andrew, from the UK, wrote when he read this letter, "Wow! Something that particularly caught my eye was: 'Do you know your different students’ best learning styles?' It reminded me of when, in my last year at my Secondary School, I was in a school show doing (among other things) my memory stunt; and one of the staff afterwards said, 'If we'd known that is how he remembers things, we might have taught him history better!' "
Let me show you how to understand their different learning styles and find out their interests, so that you can solve problems and provide a stimulating, challenging and happy classroom with achieving pupils led by a successful teacher. I was a highly successful class teacher, lucky enough to come from a teaching family and benefit from excellent initial teachers' training. Through being Froebel trained and having taught under a contrasting, very didactic, regime early on in my career, I believe I combined the best of both traditions as a teacher. I have always kept up to date with educational developments, through attending courses and through reading. I am now sharing some of this knowledge and success with you, and will do so in the future.
As a teacher, either a relatively new one or a long-serving one, do you have students who are under-achieving? Your headteacher will be amazed at the motivation of your students and the results they are achieving when you put into practice what you learn from this letter. Did you know that there are books which show classroom use & diagrams of Multiple Intelligences? These books will clarify your own understanding of MI and help you plan lessons, giving you results you may never have had before. .
Do you know your different students' best learning styles? Many of these books will help you to understand and identify learning styles, and show you how to incorporate multiple intelligences into your classroom planning? All the students will benefit from this and many could reach higher standards. The senior staff of your school and the students' parents will praise you, when they see your students so well motivated.
So you want well motivated and enthusiastic pupilsand a less stressful day for everyone, especially you?! With students succeeding, you will reduce the stress of teaching. Put some of these ideas into practice and you will then be able to provide classroom activities for multiple intelligences and use multiple intelligences task rotations to provide for pupils' different learning styles.
I know you want to take responsibility for your own Professional Development and that you realise how important it is to keep refreshing yourself and improving your techniques. The fact you are reading this shows your enthusiasm for your work. Maybe you have been class teaching for a long time and are looking for a new way of achieving success for your students. As a teacher you will want to do the best for all the students you teach, I know I did. In your class there may be future naturalists, mathematicians, computer gurus, poets, religious leaders, carpenters, crafts persons, gardeners, weather forecasters and artists. You need to find what interests each one of them and what fires their imagination. Light that spark and your reward will be their success story!
I believe that recent research can help you enormously in your quest for excellence. With increased knowledge and power at your finger tips, teaching will be a pleasure, your students will be highly motivated and their individual aptitudes developed to the full. You might even have a future Mozart, Freud, Woolf or Gandhi in your class! Read Extraordinary Minds by Howard Gardner, and look at Howard Gardner's other books which you can apply to your own class through classroom use and diagrams of Multiple Intelligence and preferred learning styles.
